a man at Brooks Brothers asked if we
were engaged

Charlotte Rauner

we’re lying feet up the wall and it’s 2:45am
you say this afternoon you had “a very adult conversation”
you say you “don’t want to talk about it”
I imagine I am sleeping and just then you decide to tell me
you say you are considering love
                                              and law school
and Portugal at the end of the month

the Lower East Side in summer convinces us to hold hands
as if Manhattan made East 9th its lungs and heart
vital organs cabs home up the FDR
we lie balls of the feet to the ceiling
it’s supposed to help circulation

blood exits the toes and feet and travels back up the body
it is a meditation practice an aphrodisiac, I saw an article
you say you don’t want me to “worry”

I imagine I can understand your home, a home, any home in general
four walls
a basement
a bedroom, the kitchen where cooking dinner means only dinner
