self-evident?
A brand-new podcast, hosted by Adam Shapiro.
The Current is excited to launch its first-ever podcast. Adam Shapiro hosts the three-part mini-series: self-evident?
At a time when the line between truth and untruth becomes increasingly blurred, self-evident? begins a conversation about whether there are still any self-evident truths we can continue to hold in 21st century America. Each episode features a wide-ranging conversation with a different guest whose ideas and life story can perhaps shed light on the state of each of the enshrined American values: life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Today, are they still still true? Are they still self-evident?
Episode 1: Life? (David Dinkins)
On the inaugural episode of self-evident?, the first and, to date, only African-American Mayor of New York City David Dinkins reflects on what it means to live a life of service, the importance of listening to others and valuing every human life, and whether he still has hope for American politics today.
David Dinkins served as the 106th Mayor of New York City and is currently a Professor in the Practice of Public Affairs at the Columbia University School of International & Public Affairs.

Episode 2: Liberty? (Glenn Beck)
On this episode of self-evident?, New York Times best-selling conservative author and broadcaster Glenn Beck talks about how Thomas Jefferson and Martin Luther King motivate him to fight for liberty, why he sometimes wants to free himself of labels like “conservative” or even “Christian” and why we need to beware of what Jesus and Hitler have in common.
Glenn Beck hosts the nationally syndicated Glenn Beck Radio Program and is the founder of TheBlaze.com.

Episode 3: The pursuit of happiness? (Tamila Pashaee)
On this final episode of self-evident?, Columbia G.S. Student Tamila Pashaee tells us what was like standing up for her rights as a woman in a 21st century theocratic country, why the decision to emigrate from Iran was so heart-wrenching and what she hoped—and maybe still hopes—can be found here in America.
Tamila Pashaee is a writer and a poet, a student at the Columbia University School of General Studies, and hopes to pursue a PhD in Education.
