Spring 2019

Sewing together a comforter
Marion Gibson

your slapdash stitching alternates
between giddy and measured
the rhythm wavers too tricky
to follow, take gentle care
for the memories worn in

when I laugh at your torn comforter
new stitches weave into the melody
dripping off my tongue, soaking
us in an unfamiliar exuberance

I weaved your laugh
into my hair this morning
so I can hear it each time
the wind pulls out another note

our joint laughter upended
old stitching, loosening string
in exchange for thick yarn
roped into my braids

it makes me imagine
how colorful our quilts will be
once clashing patches
now fading together at the seams
